Safeguarding - Monmouth Young Rugby

Rugby can have a positive influence on children, developing valuable qualities such as leadership, confidence and self-esteem. Rugby clubs across Wales have a key role in providing opportunities for children to be empowered. Coaching is a key aspect of this development and clubs need to understand their responsibility for promoting and delivering good coaching practice. This ultimately will provide children with a positive rugby experience.

Safeguarding is a key component of the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) drive to support the work of volunteers across Wales.  Policies and practices are constantly evolving and at Monmouth Young Rugby. We will always follow guidelines provided by the WRU Safeguarding.

The WRU Safeguarding Guidlines

The WRU are committed to working hard alongside our clubs to strengthen all aspects of our safeguarding activities. Children, young people and vulnerable adults involved in rugby union continue to enjoy the sport within a safe and positive environment.

The WRU have been awarded Level Three of the NSPCC National Safeguarding Standards for safeguarding children in sport.

Safeguarding is a multi-strand concept that reaches beyond basic child and adult protection. It is defined in the All Wales Child Protection Procedures as:

  • Protecting children from abuse and neglect.
  • Preventing impairment of their health or development.
  • Ensuring that they receive safe and effective care, so as to enable them to have optimum life chances.

Safeguarding in rugby is implementing the WRU Safeguarding Policy and Procedures. This ensure that children and adults at risk have the opportunity to enjoy the sport within a safe and positive environment.

Child Protection is a part of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. This refers to the activity undertaken to protect specific children

At Monmouth Young Rugby we have also developed a Grading System for our coaches. This enables parents an ‘at a glance’ view what qualifications and DBS checks our coaches have across the ages groups.
